Causes of Infant Sleep Apnea

People often assume sleep apnea is a disorder which only adults and particularly older adults suffer from. This isn't so; it is a disorder in which any person of any age can suffer from and for many different reasons.

There are two kinds of sleep apnea, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Central Sleep Apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused by obstructions within the airways, whilst Central Sleep Apnea is a neurological issue. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is usually more common among children of an older age, whilst Central Sleep Apnea is usually more prevalent among the very young.

There may be many causes of infant sleep apnea. Babies who are born prematurely are often more predisposed to temporary sleep apnea whilst the brain develops and begins to control breathing better. In Central Sleep Apnea a baby will stop breathing altogether for a space of time during the night, and may wake often, sleeping restlessly and cry often.

In obstructive sleep apnea a baby may breathe through their mouth most of the time, causing them to drool excessively. They may make snoring or wheezing noises and sleep restlessly, wake often and is likely to cry often.

Daytime is where the most symptoms can be observed. An infant who cries often, seems excessively sleepy and is crabby may be suffering from sleep apnea.

Children who are older and suffering from sleep apnea often exhibit such symptoms as cognitive and behavioural issues as well as excessive tiredness. Bed wetting – whilst common among young children – may also be an indicator of sleep apnea, particularly in children who should have outgrown it.

If you are worried your child may be exhibiting any of the symptoms of sleep apnea, you should make an appointment to see your G.P. as soon as possible, where a diagnosis can be made, advice given and treatment provided if needed.
